I tried a new technique to make this. I started off with a cool texture that I made with real paint that I later scanned in. From the texture I saw what looked like a mean monster. I then tried to bring out some features using photoshop.

This was a piece from a large advertising project that I worked on with a small group. The project was to bring new life to a dead or dying buisness and to create a logo as well as advertising for different media including print ads, motion, and web content I created the audio and did the editing. The photos were taken by my friend Kareem Bishi. The other group members who involved were Michelle Villasenor, Joe Buckel, Min Sun Kim, and Sandra Lo and each concentrated on different aspects of the project.

Messing with cinema 4d. I used bend and twist deformers create the shapes. The black shape on the right has sub polygon displacement giving it the bumpy feel. Both shapes have fresnel reflection. I also lit the scene using planes with luminescence and turning on global illumination.

Forced to be more innovative and efficient with the resources they have, companies continue to need creative thinkers to compete. No longer a manufacturing-based workforce of skilled laborers, we’re idea and technology-based. We’ve moved from the Industrial Economy to the Creative Economy. Enter the era of the designer. Design truly can change the world. Designers create devices to deliver medication more easily, develop tools to help us communicate and gather information quickly, and make the spaces where we work more efficient and safe. If a designer can develop a shoe that prevents long-distance runners from suffering common injuries, how would that affect the health of that runner, not to mention the healthcare system? This is a tremendous amount of opportunity, not only to have a career in design, but to truly make a difference through design. So, how are design jobs changing? The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of designers to grow at about the same rate as for all occupations, an increase of about 10% from 2006 to 2016. However, they also note several times that individuals with design software knowledge, particularly web site design and animation experience, will have the best opportunities. With businesses continuously shifting towards creating and utilizing new technology and developing more products, it makes sense that design careers will follow this same path. The BLS predicts increases will come from advertisers, publishers and computer design firms, including an expansion of video, movies and made-for-internet outlets. The emphasis right now is on web site design and animation for interactive media and other technology, and on print and web marketing materials for products and services. Strong competition for jobs is expected. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design currently has approximately 290 accredited institutional members. Creative fields appeal both to traditional college-aged students, as well as people looking to change careers, leading to an increase in graduates from design programs each year. Recent trends of outsourcing basic layout and design work to overseas firms are expected to continue, which will have a negative impact on more technical production-focused designers. However, most high-level graphic design jobs are expected to stay in the U.S. Just like other industries, technical and repetitive tasks may be outsourced, but strategy and conceptual work will not. Companies and individuals that value ideas above all else will thrive in the Creative Economy.

If you check out craigslist you'll notice many people wanting expensive projects done for almost nothing. I saw one that offered only 300 dollars for a 30 second 3D animation. 300!? Try adding another zero to that number asshole. I saw another one where the designer has to pay 10 dollars to enter a logo design competition where the winner would get only a 100 dollars. Fuck those guys too.

This is the logo im working for the jones center. They research and maintain a vast ecosystem down in south georgia. My sister is a biologist down at the center and according to her the long leaf pine tree is relied upon by many different species of wildlife. So naturally I decided to use the pine cone as the logo. Making an abstract pine cone has been challenging I must say.

So I officially converted over to Cinema 4D which is soooo much better and easier than blender. It has great compatiblity with after effects, photoshop, and illustrator and is way more designer friendly. Here is a little something I whipped up. I'm using volumetric lighting to give that colorful effect.

Chuck Jones

There have been many animation directors for Looney tunes but Chuck Jones is definitely my favorite. I have spent many mornings before school when I was a kid watching looney tunes for there was nothing more I would rather watch. Jones also worked along with Dr. Seus on Private Snafu and How the grinch stole christmas.

Tim Burton

I love everything this guy puts out on the screen. It's is all very mysterious, immersive, and stylized. His dark, whimsical animations take you into a completely different world. I'm looking forward to his undertaking of Alice in wonderland.

Aubrey Beardsley

I'm fascinated by the intricate illustrations of Beardsley. He is great at balancing positive and negative space and his use of proportion is very interesting as well. This is where decoration met design and had a baby. Maybe because some of them were so provocative.

Irvin Linehan

This one is hanging on my wall. 22 x 16 in. Painted in 1929.

Irvin Linehan was my grandfather and a graphic designer. He attended the Chicago Art Institute, was a member of the artist guild of Chicago, and worked at this place called Stowell art studio. Some of the stuff I know he did was work for sports illustrated, Florsheim shoes, and work for people like Bob Hope and Red Skelton. He was greatest at watercolor and airbrushing. I actually don't have much of his work nor know much more about him. In fact I never even met him because he died before I was born.

I have a new idea to work on for the alphabet assignment. I took the day off last thursday and I walked up stone mountain. I decided to walk off the beaten path and trekked to the far right side of the mountain where there are steeper cliffs. I caught a little lizard and there was also a fox that ran right in front of me. It jumped into the woods and it reappeared further down the slope, after which it paused and looked up at me for a brief moment. But that is beside the point. Stone mountain is covered everywhere with lichen and moss. I didn't have a camera at the time but I noticed a seemingly infinite amount of letterforms formed by these lichen and moss. So sunday morning I'm gonna go photograph and hopefully find everything I need.
